How Good Do You Know Furniture Style?

Furniture has been developed throughout the history. Some old-styled furniture are still in use today. This article will show you 9 types of furniture that you should know.


1. ARMOIRE
The armoire is a French word for wardrobe. The unique characteristics of the armoire are that it tends to be upright and big cupboard with doors. It sometimes comes with shelves or drawers or pigeonholes. The size of the armoire is usually big and it has no legs.

Armoire in the Renaissance period seemed to be a bit lighter than that of the 14th century. However, modern day Armoire has more sophisticated ornaments.

2. ART DECO
Art Deco was considered the modern design of French people in the 1920s. What makes it so popular is that it looks like a simple furniture, but the ornamentation is very stylish (precious metal and exotic materials could be used). The strong emphasis on craftsmanship was given to this type of furniture. 

Later, the term "ART DECO" was coined for this particular decorating style in the 1960s.

3. BACHELOR’S CHEST
Basically, Bachelor's Chest is the chest of drawers from the 18th century with writing surface. This type of drawer was so popular for almost 100 years. 

In modern day, any chest of drawers can be called Bachelor's Chest.



4. CAMEL-BACK SOFA
A type of Sofa from 18th century. It is curvy in the middle and slopes right down on both sides and go back up at each end. You could find this type of sofa from both British and American furniture makers.

5. CAPTAIN’S CHAIR
It is one type of Windsor Chair from the 19th century. The reason it was called Captain's Chair is that it was used by the actual captains of steamboats on the Mississippi River.

It was very popular among both British and American sides from the 1860s to 1890s.

6. CHAISE LONGUE
Chaise Longue means "long chair" in French. It's an armchair with extended seat that can be used as a daybed. Chaise Longue was so popular in the late 18th century.



7. LOVE SEAT
Also known as TÊTE-À-TÊTE in French, it is the 19th century upholstered sofa or double armchair with S-Curve rounded backs. It's created for 2 people.

8. MISSION FURNITURE
It was the 20th century American decoration that brought utility to the style. It was more popular on the west coast.

9. QUEEN ANNE STYLE
Named after Queen Anne, it was the 18th century British style. Since British decoration was influenced by continental style, Queen Anne Style was considered a national style.
